Exaptive is a faster, more flexible software platform for building data applications that maximizes code reuse from project to project and accelerates hypothesis generation and discovery. Founded in 2011 and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Exaptive's work is breaking new ground in health and biotech data-analytics where dispersed, dynamic, multi-disciplinary data is the preeminent challenge.

Exaptive sees data, algorithms, and data visualizations as modular components that can be connected and taken apart like Lego blocks for faster, more flexible iteration. It integrates dispersed data in real-time and empowers analysts to plug-and-play with algorithms and visualizations, coded in or outside of Exaptive, to experiment with data more cost-effectively. End users can also leverage seamless, customized software that goes beyond data reporting to interactive applications that translate analysis to action.

Exaptation is the biological phenomenon by which a trait originally adapted for one purpose is co-opted for a different purpose, often with great evolutionary implications. Feathers, for example, thought of as a tool for flight, originally evolved because they trapped heat. Exaptive, Inc. was founded on the belief that this phenomenon applies equally to human insight and innovation, such as Gutenberg inventing the printing press after seeing a wine press at work in a vineyard. Albert Einstein wrote, Combinatory play seems to be the essential feature in productive thought. By creating a software environment in which conceptual boundary-crossing is possible through the repurposing of data, algorithms, and visualizations, we envision a cross-disciplinary playground with unmatched combinatorial potential for creativity, epiphany, and innovation.
